Mount Guiting Guiting

Mountain climbing or hiking in the Philippines, is a still relatively unknown term. Really incomprehensible, because there are enough challenges to find his master.

One of these challenges, which is known by some global climbers, is the 2058m high and internationally classified with level 3 Mount Guiting Guiting. Also in short G2 called.

On 17 June 1982, four climbers take this challenge and became the first to stand at the summit. Their names are:

- Mon Ruiz
- Kim Valino
- Roel Tan Torres (of UP mountaineers)
- and Edwin Gatia of the PMS team.

It was during this expedition that one of the peaks, now known as "MAYO’S PEAK" was named after one of the team members, Mayo Monteza, who celebrated his birthday during the climb.

In 1996, through the efforts of local government executives and a handful of NGOs, the Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park was proclaimed under the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act.
The Park covers some 16,000 hectares of strict protected area and an additional 10,000 hectares of buffer zone. It straddles the island’s three municipalities of Magdiwang, San Fernando and Cajidiocan.

In the same year, Mt Guiting-Guiting Natural Park was included in the European Union funded National Integrated Protected Areas Programme (NIPAP), a five-year programm that aimed to establish protected areas in eight parks around the country.

In 1997, with funding support from the Netherlands Government, WWF-Philippines implemented an integrated conservation and development project (ICDP) on the island to complement park establishment and the protection efforts of the NIPAP project.

For your information

Situated 350 kilometers south of Manila, Sibuyan is the second largest of among the seven islands that comprise in the Romblon Province, Philippines. Today, the island is known as one of the few remaining centers of biodiversity and endemism in the country. It has a land area of approximately 45,600 hectares, about seventy percent of which is covered with forest.

At the heart of Sibuyan Island is the Mt Guiting-Guiting Natural Park (MGGNP). It is the only remaining mountain in the Philippines with relatively intact habitats along its entire elevational gradient. Mt. Guiting-Guiting’s plant and mammal biodiversity is amongst the richest in the world.

Residing in and around the interiors and upland areas of the Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park (MGGNP) are the Sibuyan Mangyan Tagabukid (SMT). The SMT has managed to retain a culture and tradition distinct from the lowland Sibuyan culture. While there are no existing pre-historic data on Sibuyan and Mangyan Tagabukid, early Spanish accounts in the 1700’s reported a considerable population of mountain dwellers along the mountain ranges of the Sibuyan Island to which present indigenous populations trace their ancestral origins.

For this facts, the entire Island of Sibuyan must be preserved & protected.

Mount Guiting-Guiting is a jagged mountain of rock that soars to over six thousand feet (2058m) above sea level. This majestic mountain is embedded in a national park and surrounded by a pristine forest area that is home to 123 species of trees, 54 of which are found nowhere else in the world and also 131 species of birds and 10 species of fruit bats.

Its not the highest peak in the Philippines but is widely accepted as being one of the most difficult climbs locally, because sometimes the terrain pitches up to 90 degrees, especially near the summit. But even it is a conquer to climb up, it is possible to manage this challenge by non-mountaineers.

Normally it is declared as a 3-day-hike and the ideal time to start the mountain climbing is during the dry months of March to May. It will be not possible and also dangerous in the rainy season, because the trails comes muddy and very slippery.

Better you take some other activities in this period.

Good to know

Before your climbing challenge can start, first head towards Tampayan in the town of Magdiwang and look for the DENR office where you’ll need to get a climbing permit and a named guide for the climb. Both of these things are required to visit Mount Guiting-Guiting. The climb itself will take about 3 days to complete. There is also a new more interesting option to do the traverse route of the mountain. We call this "The Olango Trail" or the "Olango Traverse".
